FLORENCE, AL – The University of North Alabama is the 2023 home to The Walter Trumbauer High School Theatre Festival, which will take place in buildings across the UNA campus Dec. 1-2.

“The Walter Trumbauer Festival has long stood as a beacon for young thespians, offering a unique platform for budding performers and technicians to showcase their skill, passion, and creativity,” said Michael Curtis Johnson, Chair of the Cinematic Arts and Theatre Department. “The event, rich in diversity and talent, includes 30 individual events, a one-act play festival, a studio theatre one-act play festival, along with pivotal scholarship auditions and college screening opportunities, exclusively tailored for high school seniors and junior college students.”

UNA last hosted the festival in 2017 when more than 100 schools participated, involving almost 2,500 students from across Alabama. In order to compete in the state-wide event, students must earn a ‘superior’ rating at district festivals.

“The event is a wonderful showcase of high school talent as well as UNA’s campus,” said Dr. Meghan Merciers, Interim Associate Dean in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. “Students will have an amazing opportunity to meet fellow thespians while performing on Norton’s very grand stage. They may also see themselves as future UNA students, and we would welcome them and their families to tour campus.”

The two-day festival will conclude with an awards ceremony on Dec. 2 in Norton. As the number of participants and their guests will exceed seating capacity in Norton, the Mane Room and the George Lindsey Theater will provide a satellite viewing opportunity.
