FLORENCE, AL – Kilby Laboratory School on the University of North Alabama campus has been recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education as a Legislative School Performance Recognition Program School. The recognition was part of a ceremony that took place recently in Montgomery.

“This recognition from the State is a testament to the hard work and the love of teaching and learning of our Kilby faculty and students,” said Dr. Eric Kirkman, Kilby School Director. “Even after 150 years, the lab school at the University of North Alabama continues to provide experiences and programs of excellence that allow both the Kilby students and the UNA preservice students to move on both enriched and prepared for their future endeavors.

The Legislative School Performance Recognition Program is designed to identify schools in one of two categories. First are the schools that demonstrate high performance by being ranked in the Top 25 percent of public schools as ranked in the school report card. The second are schools that demonstrate exemplary progress by improving the overall annual ranking of the school by at least one letter grade, as ranked by the school report card. Kilby is bring recognized because the school grading score or letter grade fell into the first category above for the 2021-2022 year.

“Kilby Laboratory School is a dynamic learning and mentoring environment for students, as well as future teachers,” said Dr. Katie Kinney, Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences. “The access that UNA teacher candidates have to learn from Kilby’s master teachers and high-performing students is invaluable to their development as a professional educator. We are thrilled that Kilby is being recognized as a model for the region and the state.”
