FLORENCE, Ala. - Two graduate assistants working in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the University of North Alabama recently submitted research proposals to the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine and were accepted. Graduate assistants Lauren Gover and Jared Hornsby, both 2010 UNA graduates with degrees in health, physical education and recreation, submitted separate thesis proposals on perceived exertion, or the subjective response to exercise, in mid-October. They will present their projects at the regional chapter meeting in February 2011 and at the national meeting next June. "They are the first graduate assistants we've had in this department and in the College of Education," said Dr. Matthew Green, associate professor of health, physical education and recreation. "Gover and Hornsby are exceptional, engaged and very goal-oriented undergraduates who are involved in taking part in lab projects." Gover and Hornsby are currently seeking graduate degrees in health promotion and human performance through the UNA master's program, a one-year curriculum they hope to complete by next summer. Their thesis proposals were peer-reviewed by professionals across the country who work in the health, physical education and recreation field. "This is a big deal for the graduate assistants," said Dr. Tom Coates, HPER department chair and professor. "They are two very fine young people who have the potential to go on to doctorate-level work."
