FLORENCE, Ala. - Under the organization of the Higher Education Partnership, Alabama's 13 public universities will participate in National College Colors Day 2009 this Friday.
A statewide College Colors Day was held at the State Capitol last Friday and was attended by UNA Student Government Association President Samuel Thigpen and UNA's two new lion mascots, Leo and Una. College Colors Day, which coincides with both "back to campus" and the kick-off of intercollegiate athletics, strives to promote higher education through increased public awareness and celebrates the achievements and colleges and universities, acknowledging their critical and fundamental importance to the United States. College Colors Day is quickly becoming an annual event where individuals show their school spirit from companies and organizations across the country - Friday, the day prior to the first full Saturday of the college football season. With the participation of hundreds of companies and the support of hundreds of colleges and universities, College Colors Day 2009 will be a nationwide celebration of the collegiate spirit.Purple Reign Week
For UNA, College Colors Day coincides with a similar community initiative, Purple Reign Week. Purple Reign Week is a challenge to Shoals area businesses to decorate and show UNA spirit as the UNA Lions kick off their fall athletic season the first week of September. The winner of the Purple Reign Week challenge - the local business showing the greatest UNA spirit - will receive breakfast from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts the morning of Sept. 8. Krispy Kreme coffee and doughnuts will be delivered to the business by the UNA fall season coaching staff. In addition to breakfast from Krispy Kreme, the winning business will receive 20 free tickets to the Sept. 5 UNA-Carson Newman College football game and 20 free tickets to the North Alabama Classic volleyball tournament in Flowers Hall. How to participate
Businesses competing in Purple Reign Week should enter by completing the form at www.una.edu/purple. That same Web site offers a downloadable coupon for 15 percent off of UNA decorations, apparel and other items at the UNA Campus Bookstore. The coupon is available to local businesses as well as all UNA fans and is good through the 2009-10 academic year. Purple Reign Week participants will be judged by the UNA Student Government Association beginning at 3 p.m. Sept. 4. Judging will be based on three criteria: When the business began decorating for Purple Reign Week, employee participation in showing UNA spirit, and best decoration.About The University of North Alabama
