FLORENCE, AL – Germanfest, an annual event sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of North Alabama, is scheduled for Oct. 12 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in front of Wesleyan Hall on the UNA campus. The event is free and open to the public.

In its fifth year, Germanfest is made possible by the “Deutsch macht Spaß” grant from the American Association of Teachers of German and is closely tied to the traditional German Oktoberfest, with a UNA twist “to highlight some of the same traditions but with an emphasis on the German language courses that we offer here at UNA,” said Dr. Rebecca Linam, an event organizer as well as adjunct German professor.

“Attendees can see students dressed in traditional German outfits, such as lederhosen and dirndl,” she said. “They can also try some traditional German foods, such as bratwurst, which is German sausage, spätzle, or German noodles, pretzels, gummy bears, which are made in Germany, and several others.”

In addition to traditional German clothing and food, Linam said there will be German music as well as a photo backdrop with a scene from a German village perfect for a selfie or two. Trivia contests will also take place, and the first 60 attendees will receive a free t-shirt.

“I recommend it to anyone who wants to get in touch with his German heritage or is just curious aboutGerman traditions at this time of year,” she said. “Many of our students are studying German and love to speak the language with anyone.”
