FLORENCE, Ala. — In just six short weeks, the Shoals area will welcome dozens of filmmakers as the University of North Alabama hosts the 12th annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival.

This year's event will include public film screenings, the annual awards show and panel discussions with a variety of filmmakers and film experts. Among this year's panelists will be Florence native and renowned film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum and Rick Ray, director of "10 Questions for the Dalai Lama." The George Lindsey UNA Film Festival has attracted several significant films over the years, including Shane Acker's Oscar-nominated "9," Steve Guttenberg's "P.S. Your Cat Is Dead, Hall's "Lightening Bug" and the Katherine Tucker Windham documentary "Kathryn: A Story of a Teller." Films screened at the 2009 festival are schedules to be announced Feb. 3. This year's festival will also feature the second annual Leo Awards, a student film competition, March 3. The George Lindsey UNA Film Festival is one of the few film festivals hosted by a university. The event was founded in 1998 by UNA alumnus and celebrated actor and entertainer George Lindsey. Lindsey's own film career has included several important roles, including the character Goober Pyle on "The Andy Griffith Show."
