FLORENCE, Ala. - Ice skating outdoors in Alabama probably isn't a very common occurrence, but it will, in fact, take place on the University of North Alabama campus Friday, Feb. 12, from noon to 10 p.m., and then again Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., in the GUC parking lot.
Members of UNA's University Program Council (UPC) are responsible for bringing the ice rink to campus. UNA Director of Student Engagement Tyler Thompson said the rink is part of a series of events titled "Snow Days."
"The SGA University Program Council formed a special committee last month to create a series of special events to combat the winter slump," Thompson said. "One of the ideas was to bring something really unique to campus. The committee did some research and discovered a company that would setup an Ice Rink on campus. When this was brought up to the different branches of Student Government, each time there was an overwhelming gasp of excitement, so it seemed that this event had truly struck a chord with students," he said.
Admission is free for UNA students and $5 for all others; skates will be provided.
