FLORENCE, Ala. - The Office of Career Planning and Development will host its second-annual Career Carnival for students seeking employment April 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Amphitheater. The event will showcase 10 employers and four academic participants at the University of North Alabama. Jennifer Smith, career development coordinator, said the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bank Independent, Becker Professional Education, First Metro Bank, Kelly Services, Sherwin Williams, Social Security Administration, Target, Verizon Wireless and Yulista Management Services will have booths set up at the Career Carnival. For the first time, the Center for Academic Advising and Retention Services, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Department of Interdisciplinary Studies will also be featured at the Career Carnival. "This is an exploratory event so that students can come talk to employers about part and full-time jobs and internships, and gain insight about the job market," Smith said. Students who attend the Career Carnival will receive six tickets, which they can use for food, games and to register to win one of two $50 Best Buy gift cards. Smith encourages students to bring a resume if they're interested in finding a job at the event. "I encourage students to talk to employers, even if they don't think there's anything for them (with that company)," Smith said. "Networking and talking to people is important." Last year's Career Carnival drew in approximately 350 students. Smith hopes to exceed that number at this year's event and promote a fun and casual atmosphere for students. In the event of rain, the Career Carnival will be relocated to the market place of the Guillot University Center.
