FLORENCE, AL – Dr. Greg Carnes, Dean of the College of Business and Technology at the University of North Alabama, has worked with Wiley to co-author Fundamentals of Taxation for Individuals, a tax accounting textbook, the publisher’s first textbook on this topic that launched in classrooms nationwide this fall.

“They approached me about the opportunity to author this book in 2019 because I have been the author of their tax material for their CPA Exam review course, Wiley CPAexcel, for the last 20 years,” Carnes said. “I was very intrigued by this opportunity and challenge but did not know if I could complete the work given the responsibilities of my role as Dean.”

During the next several years, however, and over the course of early mornings, late nights, and weekends spent working on the project that he co-authored with Suzanne Youngberg, the Internship Director and Instructor in the Department of Accountancy in the College of Business at Northern Illinois University, the textbook has been published and is in use this fall in collegiate classrooms across the country.

The publication of a specialized textbook, especially one for a leading publisher in the industry, is a reflection of the scholarship taking place at UNA as well as among academicians at the highest levels, according to Dr. Ross Alexander, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

“In addition to being a stellar dean with a slew of impressive accomplishments, Dr. Carnes is one of the foremost Accounting scholars in the nation,” he said. “The publication of this textbook by a leading publisher accurately reflects his scholarly reputation. We are quite fortunate to have him at UNA!”

Carnes said working with Wiley has been a supportive experience.

The publishing company “allowed us to add videos to every chapter, as well as numerous learning tools,” he said. “We have taken a very different approach to teaching tax than the competitor books, and, thus far, the early reviews on Fundamentals of Taxation for Individuals have been very positive.”

Carnes and Youngberg are already at work on a second book for Wiley, Taxation of Business Entities, which is expected to be available in 2024.
