The Association also serves as the Pacific Coast regional division of the American Association of Geographers

Pretes is originally from California and has held academic positions at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Stanford University. He continues to conduct research in the Pacific Coast region, most recently on national parks in California, Oregon and Washington.

Since 2012, Pretes has mentored six UNA geography students who have presented their research at the APCG's annual meeting, giving them an opportunity to interact with West Coast scholars and explore a different part of the country.
