University Of North Alabama Professor Pretes Named Vp Of Prestigious Geography Association.

FLORENCE, Ala.- Dr. Michael Pretes, professor of Geography at the University of North Alabama, has been elected Vice President and President-Elect of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers (APCG).

Pretes was elected at the APCG's annual meeting held in Reno, Nevada, Oct. 24-27. Pretes will serve as the Vice President for one year and then as President of the society from 2019 to 2020.

Pretes' election is the first time in the 83-history of the Association that a member residing outside of the Pacific region has been elected as Vice President and President-Elect.

APCG was founded in 1935, and has more than 500 members. The Association serves as the principal organization for academic and professional geographers in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as British Columbia and the Yukon Territory in Canada. The Association also serves as the Pacific Coast regional division of the American Association of Geographers

Pretes is originally from California and has held academic positions at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Stanford University. He continues to conduct research in the Pacific Coast region, most recently on national parks in California, Oregon and Washington.

Since 2012, Pretes has mentored six UNA geography students who have presented their research at the APCG's annual meeting, giving them an opportunity to interact with West Coast scholars and explore a different part of the country.
