Focused & Junk Email
Focused Inbox for Outlook
Clutter email has been replaced with the "focused inbox." Focused Inbox separates your inbox into two tabs—Focused and Other. Your most important email messages are on the Focused tab while the rest remain easily accessible—but out of the way—on the Other tab. For more information see, Focused Inbox in Action.
Notes:
- In Outlook for Windows, Focused Inbox is available only for Microsoft 365, Exchange, and Outlook.com accounts.
- If you don't see Focused and Other in your mailbox, you might have a Clutter folder instead. For more information, see Use Clutter to sort low-priority messages in Outlook.

Block or Allow/Junk Mail Settings
Use the Block or Allow settings to help control unwanted and unsolicited email messages by creating and managing lists of email addresses and domains that you trust and those that you don’t. The instructions below are for Outlook Web App, see below for instructions and explanations regarding the following: (1) managing your junk email, (2) safe senders and domains, and (3) blocked senders.
- At the top of the screen, select Settings > View all Outlook Settings> Mail.
- Select Junk Email
- Below are the block or allow settings for managing email addresses and domains:
Note: Due to the recent Microsoft changes, disabling junk email is no longer an option for users

Blocked Senders and Domains |
Blocked senders and domains are people you don't want to receive email messages from. Messages received from any email address or domain in your blocked senders list are sent directly to your Junk Email folder. For more details, see Block senders from sending you email.

Safe Senders and Recipients | Safe senders and domains are people whose email you don’t want diverted to your Junk Email folder. Add senders you trust and recipients that you don't want to block to this list. For more details, see Stop messages from going to Junk Email. |
Only trust email from addresses in my Safe senders and domains list and Safe mailing lists | If you select this check box, email from any address in your safe senders, domain lists, and safe mailing lists will be treated as safe. |

Blocked senders and domains are people you don't want to receive email messages from. Messages received from any email address or domain listed in your blocked senders list are sent directly to your Junk Email folder.
- Sign in to Outlook Web App.
- At the top of the screen, select Settings > View all Outlook Settings> Mail.
- Select Junk Email
- To add an entry to Blocked senders, select the Add icon under the Blocked senders and domains title, enter the email address or domain that you want to mark as safe in the text box. For example, to mark all email from addresses that end in contoso.com as safe, enter contoso.com in the text box. To mark a specific person as safe, enter that person's full email address. For example, to mark all messages from KatieJ@contoso.com as safe, enter KatieJ@contoso.com in the text box.
- Select Save to save your changes

To remove an entry from your Blocked senders and domains, click on the Trash icon next to the entry

Select Save to save your changes.

To change an entry in Blocked senders and domains, select the entry and select Edit .

Make any changes you want, and select Save to save your change.
Safe senders and domains are people you always want to receive email messages from. Safe recipients are recipients that you don't want to block, usually groups that you’re a member of. Messages received from any email address or domain in your safe senders and recipients list are never sent to your Junk Email folder.
IMPORTANT: The server that hosts your mailbox may have junk email filtering settings that block messages before they reach your mailbox.

Remove a sender or domain from the safe senders list
- To remove an entry from Safe senders and domains, click on the Trash icon next to the entry
- Select Save to save your changes.
Edit a sender or domain in the safe senders list
- To change an entry in Safe senders and domains, select the entry and select Edit .
- Make any changes you want, and select Save to save your change.
Junk Email Protection Filter
By default, the Junk Email Filter is turned on and the protection level is set to No Automatic Filtering. You can make the filter more aggressive by changing the level of protection that it provides. The Junk Email Filter evaluates each incoming message based on several factors. These can include the time when the message was sent and the content of the message. The instructions below are for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, not the Outlook Web App.
Notes:
- To change the options for the Junk Email Filter, do the following: Click Home> Delete group> Junk > Junk Email Options.
- Junk Email Filter Lists let you control what is considered spam. You can add names, email addresses and domains to these lists so the filter doesn’t check messages from sources you trust, or blocks messages that arrive from specific email addresses and domains you don't know or trust.
Settings | Description |
No automatic filtering | Mail from blocked senders is still moved to the Junk Email Folder. Although this turns off the automatic Junk Email Filter, messages are still evaluated by using the domain names and email addresses in your Blocked Senders List. For more details, see change the level of junk email protection. |
Low | Move the most obvious junk email to the Junk email folder. If you don't receive many junk messages, or want to filter only the messages that are the most obvious junk, select this option. For more details, see change the level of junk email protection. |
High |
Most junk email is caught, but some regular mail may be caught as well. Check your Junk Email folder often. If you receive lots of junk messages, but don’t want to restrict messages from senders on your safe lists, select this option. We recommend you occasionally check the Junk E-mail folder to make sure that a message you wanted isn’t moved in error. For more details, see change the level of junk email protection. |
Safe Lists Only | Only mail from people or domains on your Safe Senders List or Safe Recipients List will be delivered to your Inbox. This is the most restrictive option. Any message that isn't from someone on your Safe Senders List or isn't to a mailing list on your Safe Recipients List, is classified as junk. For more details, see change the level of junk email protection. |
***You can tell Outlook to delete all suspected junk messages instead of moving them to the Junk E-mail folder. This takes away your ability to review messages for possible false positives, so consider the risks of using this option.
- In Mail, click Home> Junk > Junk E-mail Options.
- On the Options tab, check the Permanently delete suspected junk email instead of moving it to the Junk E-mail folder
