Navigators
"Striving to passionately engage, unite and connect our international students"
The responsibilities of the scholarship include mentoring and befriending incoming international students. Navigators assist new international students with accessing services available on campus and introduce cultural and social adjustments during orientation and throughout the school year. Each Navigator will help with orientation, conversation partners, and other OIA programming.
COMPENSATION for Navigators: $1,500 scholarship ($750 per semester)
Requirements
- Act as OIA ambassadors and semester orientation leaders
- Be a Lion Pride Mentor (details will be given during training)
- Answer questions about life at UNA, American culture, and getting adjusted to college life
- Introduce new international students to activities and services on campus
- Facilitate at OIA events and activities
- Be a connector of International students to campus activities, encouraging participation and relationship building
- GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Be a UNA student for the full August 2024-May 2025 school year
- Proven track record of on-campus involvement/leadership
- Interest and sensitivity towards cultural and religious diversity as well as multicultural issues
- Ability to take ideas from concept to completion
- Self-motivated with strong time-management skills
- Positive ambassador for UNA and OIA
- Positive attitude and high level of enthusiasm about working with international students
** Please note the responsibilities of Navigator and Residence Assistant (RA) have time conflict which would prevent an individual from holding both positions.
- MANDATORY TRAINING: 2 training sessions: May 9, 2024 and August 12-13, 2024
- ORIENTATIONS: You must be available to participate in the following OIA Orientations (subject to change):
- Fall New Student Orientation August 14-20, 2024
- Spring 2025 dates will be given later
- MANDATORY TWICE-A-MONTH MEETINGS (subject to change): Set according to group availability
- OIA EVENTS: Navigators must be present at ALL pre-determined OIA events, unless there is an emergency or your absence has been discussed with the Navigator team leader and/or Assistant Director, International Student Services and Success. OIA events may include, but are not limited to the following: Global Lions RSO events, Travel with Me series (~4 per year), Homecoming Parade, Dances, Passport to the World, social events, on-campus weeknight events, etc.
Application
Application packets will be due by Noon on Monday, April 22, 2024. All materials will be uploaded within the online application form.
To complete this application, each applicant must:
1) Answer all questions.
2) Submit a resume which highlights leadership experience and community involvement.
3) Submit a recent photograph of applicant.
4) Participate in a private interview on April 25 or 26, 2024 at Lafayette Hall.
