Sociology Scholarships and Awards
Endowed Scholarship for the Advancement in Sociological Study
Required Criteria:
- A full-time undergraduate student at UNA of at least junior standing.
- A declared Sociology major.
- In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.3 for Sociology courses and UNA cumulative.
- A member of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society (or in the process of applying for the membership).
An interested student must:
- First, submit the Endowed Scholarship Application . The application only takes a few minutes to complete. The deadline to complete the application is March 1, 2024.
- Next, submit the Departmental Application with a separate cover letter to mmtakeuchi@una.edu. The submission deadline is March 1, 2024. *Please note: Only the applications from those who have completed the general university application above will be considered.
Departmental Student Awards
The Department recognizes students annually who have excelled at scholarship, student research, and service.
To be eligible for any of the awards below, student must be:
- A credit seeking student during the academic year
- Declared Sociology as a major
- Be in good standing at the University
- Completed 15 hours in sociology coursework
- One-time award per student (e.g., you cannot receive recognition for outstanding scholarship more than once)
Applications are due Friday, March 1, 2024. All awards winners will receive a certificate of recognition and plaque.
Awards
Outstanding Scholarship
This award recognizes students who have exhibited academic excellence and can include GPA or academic performance across sociology classes. If you are submitting based on academic performance you must make a persuasive argument.
Submission/selection process: Students must submit a 1-2 page statement reflecting on what they have accomplished. The Undergraduate Awards Committee then selects the submission that best reflects academic excellence.
Outstanding Student Research
This award may recognize an array of accomplishments, including presentations, publications, and grants.
Submission/selection process: Students must submit a 1-2 page statement reflecting on what they have accomplished. The Undergraduate Awards Committee then selects the submission that best reflects scholarly excellence.
Outstanding Service
This award recognizes students who have exhibited exceptional commitment and impact in supporting the community outside of the UNA campus through community service.
Submission/selection process: Students must submit a 1-2 page statement reflecting on what they have accomplished. The Undergraduate Awards Committee then selects the submission that best reflects humanitarian service.
Promising Alumni
This award recognizes a senior student who shows exceptional promise as evidenced through an accumulation of scholarship, research, and service to the university and/or community.
Submission/selection process: Students must submit a 1-2 page statement reflecting on what they have accomplished. The Undergraduate Awards Committee then selects the submission that best reflects an accumulation of exemplary scholarship, research, and service.
