Program of Study

Your program of study is what you are in the US to do - what you are studying. Your Form I-20 or DS-2019 should always be up-to-date with the actual studies you are doing right now.

If you are learning English as a Second Language, your Form I-20 or DS-2019 will say Education Level is "Language Training".
If you are studying for a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, it will say your Education Level is Bachelor and your major is Chemistry.
If you are studying for a Masters of Business Administration degree, it will say your Education Level is Master's and your major is Business Administration and Management, General.

Updates to your Program of Study that require a new I-20

  • change of Education Level - for example, finishing ESL and moving to academic study
  • change of major or addition of a major or minor
  • change in Program End Date - This is the date you are expected to finish your current Program and it determines the last date you have student status in the country.
    • Extension - if you need more time to complete your studies, your I-20 can be extended with permission. Don't ever let it expire unless you have finished your studies.
    • Completion or Graduation - when you apply for graduation with the Registrar's office, your DSO can see. Your I-20 will be shortened to match the graduation date.
