Meet Our Staff

The Student Engagement team is made complete by student workers, graduate assistants, and professional staff. Below you will find information on who we are and what is included in our responsibilities.

Director of Student Engagement
Tyler Thompson, MSW

Tyler Thompson

Tyler holds a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business from the University of Alabama (2008) and a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama (2012). Tyler is responsible for student organization registration and training, the Student Government Association, Student Leadership Consultants, Miss UNA, Mane Month, and Homecoming Student Events. 

Prior to coming to UNA, Tyler worked for the Walt Disney Company, the University of Alabama, and the VA Medical Center. Tyler's interests and hobbies include DIY Projects, the piano, and tennis.

Senior Administrative Assistant
Juliette Butler, CAP, OM

Juliette Butler

Juliette holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Alabama (1991). Juliette has been working for UNA since 1997. Juliette is responsible for the administrative operations of the Student Engagement Office, where she provides support to Alternative Breaks, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Leadership and Volunteerism, Recognized Student Organizations, the Student Government Association, the University Program Council, and the Miss UNA Program.

Outside of our office, Juliette serves as a committee member for the University Awards Gala, as well as a member of the Presidential Mentors Academy Advisory Committee and Student Allocations Funding Committee.Her hobbies includes dancing, listening to music, arts, and crafts.

Assistant Director of Student Engagement for Fraternity & Sorority Life
Ashley Christman, M.Ed.

Ashley Christman

Ashley holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Psychology from Ashland University (2013) and a Master of Education in Adult Learning and Development from Cleveland State University (2014). Ashley is currently working on her Doctor of Education in Student Affairs Administration and Leadership at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Ashley is responsible for Fraternity and Sorority Life, where she serves as the advisor for all governing councils and the Greek honor societies.

Prior to coming to UNA, Ashley worked at Ashland University as their Fraternity and Sorority Advisor. Ashley likes spending time with her two dogs (Carlos, a yellow Labrador retriever, and Cedric, a Doberman mix), running, and reading.

Bethany Green, M.Ed.

Bethany Green

Bethany holds a Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts and Public Communications from the University of North Alabama (2010) and a Master of Education in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from Belmont University (2013). Bethany is currently working on her Doctor of Public Administration at West Chester University. Bethany is responsible for Alternative Breaks, Feeding the Pride food pantry, community service projects/volunteer opportunities, and service-learning initiatives. 

Prior to returning to UNA, Bethany worked as the Light the Night Coordinator for the Leukemia nd Lymphoma Society. Bethany enjoys traveling, being outdoors, painting and drawing, and nonprofit/community development work.

Kayla Edwards
Kayla Edwards

Kayla holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Communications from the University of North Alabama (2017). Kayla is currently pursuing a degree in Higher Education at UNA. Kayla serves as the advisor for the University Program Council and Co-Director of the Miss UNA Competition.


Kayla began her career in Student Affairs as a Student Leadership Consultant in our Student Engagement Office in 2014. During her undergraduate time at UNA, Kayla studied abroad at the University of Applied Sciences in Dornbin, Austria. Kayla is a travel enthusiast and enjoys adding new countries to her list every year. She also enjoys hiking, walking her dog, and watching the Office.

Nikki Mathews
Nikki Mathews

Nikki is a first year graduate student, working on her Professional Studies degree with a concentration in Higher Education. Nikki holds a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from the University of North Alabama (Class of 2019). She was a recipient of the undergraduate service award and a promising alumni. During her time as an undergraduate, Nikki was involved in Alternative Breaks, SGA, SOAR, LaGrange Society, and Phi Mu Fraternity. Outside of school, Nikki enjoys binge watching tv shows, taking naps, and serving the school and community.

Graduate Assistant, Fraternity and Sorority Life
Grant Gunn

Grant Gunn

Grant is a first year graduate student in the Higher Education Administration program at UNA. He is a 2019 graduate of UNA, with a Bachelor of Business Administration in general management. As an undergraduate he was recognized as the fraternity man of the year and as a recipient of the outstanding undergraduate service award. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, and was initiated into the Theta Upsilon chapter in fall 2017. During his time as an undergraduate he served the Student Government Association as treasurer and as a member of the judicial committee. Additionally he was a member of UPC and served as the president of NPHC. In addition to his work in Student Engagement, he is a member advocate for Listerhill Credit Union. When Grant is not at work or in class, he likes to spend time with family, friends, and fraternity brothers, and enjoys playing the piano.

Graduate Assistant, Student Communications
Jason Howell

Jason is a first year graduate student, working on his Professional Studies degree with a concentration in Higher Education Administration. Jason holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism with concentrations in Advertising and Public Relations from Middle Tennessee State University. He served as the Recruitment Coordinator and Vice President of the MTSU Chapter of Public Relations Society of America. While attending MTSU Jason worked in Housing Residence Life as a Desk Assistant and Conference Director. Also, he completed an internship with MTSU Campus Recreation Facility focusing on marketing and strategic communication. Jason also holds an Associate of Science from Columbia State Community College. While attending from Columbia State Community College he served as a Peer Leader and was an active member of the President’s Leadership Society. Outside of class, Jason likes to knit, drink coffee and binge watch TV shows.

Makinley Barnett

Makinley Barnett

Makinley is a graduate of Ardmore High School. She is currently a senior majoring in Accounting with a minor in Sports Management.  Makinley serves as the Director of Recruitment for the College Panhellenic Council, and the Director of Activities for her sorority. She is a member of Gamma Sigma Alpha, Order of Omega, and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Makinley uses her free time for CrossFit, paddle boarding, watching baseball, and spending time with her family and friends at their lake house.

Matt Anderson

Matt is a sophomore from Huntsville, Alabama majoring in Hospitality Management with a minor in Communication Studies. He is the service chair of Alpha Tau Omega, a member of Lion Buddies, and a Resident Advisor (RA) on campus. Matt loves to travel, watch any competition reality tv show, listen to music, and hang out with friends.

Ana Castillo

Ana Castillo

Ana is a senior majoring in Interior Design with a minor in Innovation Engineering. On campus, Ana is the co-chair for the UPC Culture and Education Committee and Formal Recruitment Chair for Alpha Delta Pi. During her time at UNA, Ana has been a member of Freshman Forum, CCM, and the Council of Interior Architecture. Ana enjoys travel, all things outdoors, watching Chip and Jo, and listening to music.

Kaitlyn Fennell

Kaitlyn Fennell

Kaitlyn is a junior majoring in Fashion Merchandising with minors in Fashion Design and Marketing. She is a member of the SGA Judicial Branch, National Society of Leadership and Success, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Order of Omega, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. She has served on the Freshman Forum, the SGA Senate, and is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and the Fashion Association (where she currently serves as President). In her free time, Kaitlyn likes to sew, travel, hike, camp, bake, read, do yoga, and walk her dogs.

Mark Perkins

Mark Perkins

Mark is a senior majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in Broadcasting and a minor in Spanish. On campus, Mark serves as a LaGrange Society Ambassador, SOAR Counselor, and as a member of the ESPN Production Crew. Outside of UNA, Mark enjoys outdoor recreation, traveling, and swimming.

Brooke Shewbart

Brooke is a sophomore majoring in nursing. On campus, Brooke serves is in the Honor's College, a member of Phi Mu, in SNA, and is a past member of UPC. Outside of UNA, Brooke enjoys socializing, being around friends and traveling.

Molly Stephens

Molly is a junior majoring in Secondary Education with a concentration in English Language Molly enjoys outdoor activities (i.e., hiking and camping), painting, and photography. On campus, Molly is the Director of Programming for the College Panhellenic Council, VP for Web Communications for Collegiate Entrepreneur Organizations, and Social Media Coordinator for the Literacy Advocacy Foundation.
