Foreign Languages Scholarships
The department of Foreign Languages is committed to providing students with meaningful academic as well as experiential learning opportunities. The scholarships below provide funds to successful applicants (both current and incoming) who are majoring and/or minoring in a foreign language. Vance Ross Foreign Languages Current Use Scholarship
The scholarship is to be awarded to incoming freshman at the University of North Alabama. Recipients must have a minimum overall high school GPA of 3.5 and be majoring in a foreign language. Preference shall be given to applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence in a foreign language and financial need based on the current and future need-based guidelines of the University. Selections shall be made by the Office of Admissions in consultation with the Office of Student Financial Aid. Awards shall be made in scholarship amounts based on funds available and number of students selected. The scholarship may be renewable for up to four years of a recipient’s undergraduate education provided the recipient maintains a minimum cumulative UNA GPA of 3.5 and continues to major in a foreign language. Dr. Craig Christy 4-Year German Current Use Scholarship
This scholarship will provide scholarship support to an incoming freshman who has declared a major, minor, or concentration in German. Apply here with Student Financial Aid
Harriet R. King Hufstedler Modern Foreign Language Department Endowed Scholarship
Application Guidelines
Students majoring or minoring in Foreign Languages, French, German or Spanish are eligible to apply for a Hufstedler Scholarship. Four or more awards will be available per year, depending on the merit of applications received.
Required Criteria:
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall;
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the foreign language major/minor;
- Minimum of 30 credit hours completed;
- At least one semester of study left after the award is made.
An interested student must:
- First, submit the Endowed Scholarship Application. The application only takes a few minutes to complete. The deadline to complete this application is March 1, 2025.
- Next, submit the Departmental Application. The submission deadline for this application is March 1, 2025. *Please note: Only the applications from those who have completed the general university application above will be considered.
All criteria will be interpreted according to the discretion of the Department Scholarship Committee. In judging a scholarship candidate, the Committee will consider a student's potential for making a contribution in the area of Foreign Languages as well as evidence of academic achievement, responsible character, sense of purpose, growth, and participation in departmental activities. Significant contribution to foreign languages or the department may be a deciding factor, if all other criteria are judged equal.
German Current Use Scholarship
Application Guidelines
This scholarship will provide support to a sophomore, junior, or senior with a major, minor, or concentration in German. If no students apply who have declared a major, minor, or concentration in German, the scholarship will be given to a student who has declared a major, minor, or concentration in French.

- Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall;
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the foreign language major/minor;
- Minimum of 30 credit hours completed;

Ross Family in Memory of Marcia Ross Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship
Application Guidelines
Students eligible for a Ross Scholarship include those majoring or minoring in Foreign Languages, French, German or Spanish who will participate in a study abroad trip in the Department of Foreign Languages during the current academic year.
One or more awards will be available per year, depending on the merit of applications received.

- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in the foreign language major/minor.

UNA Education Abroad Scholarship
UNA students are eligible for up to a $1,000 scholarship towards airfare and/or tuition and fees for a faculty-led trip or semester or year abroad at a partner school. UNA Education Abroad Scholarship Application.
