Internships and Externships
General requirements to take part in a Sanders COBT internship for academic credit:
- Must be admitted to UNA as a regular, degree-seeking student.
- Must have completed at least 24 semester hours toward a degree in progress at the University of North Alabama with a minimum UNA GPA of 2.5 (NOTE: Some majors may have broader or more stringent GPA requirements and/or more semester hours).
- BBA students must be formally admitted to the College of Business and Technology in order to participate in an internship (this does not include BSCS and BSIT students).
- Transfer students must have successfully completed one semester at UNA.
- The employer you intern with must be willing to let you work at least 150 total hours.
- Schedule a meeting with the Sanders COBT Career Development Manager to discuss internship search strategies.
- Reach out to your department chair and professors to see if they know of any companies looking for an intern.
- Use Symplicity and Handshake to search for job opportunities.
- Contact businesses directly to inquire about their need for interns.
- Join the Sanders College of Business and Technology Alumni Group on LinkedIn to see weekly job postings.
Once you have identified an employer to intern with:
- Log in to Symplicity with your portal username/password.
- Upload your resume (subject to approval).
- Follow job application instructions.
- Upon obtaining an internship offer, download the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will need to be signed by your proposed employer. This document outlines the responsibilities of the employer. Download the MOU here.
- In Symplicity, select the Experiential Learning option on the left-hand menu.
- Add New Experience. For detailed instructions, click here.
- When completing the application, it’s essential that you select the appropriate internship type based on your major and, if applicable, international student status.
- Upload the completed MOU as an attachment to your Experiential Learning Application. International students will also need to attach a CPT Authorization Request Form (contact Sarah Stevens in UNA’s Office of International Affairs if you have questions).
- Once you complete the above steps and submit your documentation in Symplicity, the system will initiate a workflow process for approval. The initial review / approval will be completed by the faculty chair in your department.
Externships are short term professional experiences (1-8 hours). If you are curious about an industry or work environment, an externship will allow you to spend a few hours shadowing an employer. You will get a real-life view of what that career looks like on a day-to-day basis.
If you would like to do an externship, contact Erin Froman at ecfroman@una.edu. Ms. Froman will coordinate the day/time for you to shadow the employer.
