UPD’s Lion 360 campaign provides training, programs, and resources promoting Safety and Crime Prevention at UNA. These are offered to all students, staff, faculty or departmental groups. The Lion 360 mission is to build an energetic and inclusive outreach program within the University of North Alabama, where every individual is valued and allied systems work together for the benefit of all students, faculty, staff and community partners. Lion 360 strives to create a culture of belonging while strengthening the UNA community by addressing basic needs, fostering long-term stability, and promoting safety and well-being.
Lion 360 includes comprehensive crime prevention initiatives, such as A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate), self-defense programs, C.P.R. (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), SNAP (Student Nighttime Auxiliary Program), safety programs and countless collaborative programs to fit any education event which empowers individuals with knowledge and tools to stay safe. Through proactive education, collaboration and outreach, Lion 360 aims to build a resilient, informed and secure campus and community environment.

Contact our Training Specialist if you have a group on campus that you would like us to present to on various safety topics, such as; issues of personal safety, including alcohol/drug abuse awareness, prevention of sexual assaults and property crimes, or travel safety tips. We can also assist in emergency preparedness areas, such as; A.L.I.C.E., CPR, 1st Aid, Stop the Bleed, and many other safety topics.

The Mane Safety webpage serves as a “one-stop” emergency management center, offering resources, policies, and prevention information. It covers all safety topics, such as; fires, evacuations, first aid, shelter in place, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and alcohol and drug prevention, etc.
Upon request, University Police officers attend meetings to provide up-to-date crime prevention information, and to hear the concerns of University community members about crime and safety issues. Officers also offer safety programming to their respective campus communities. Email police@una.edu for more information.
Members of the University Police Department are active participants in University and community sponsored awareness programs. One purpose of these programs is to inform the University community about the many resources available to them through various departments on campus.

A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuation. The main objective of the program is to provide students and staff with options to increase their chance of survival during an Active Shooter on Campus emergency. Where the traditional lockdown response is passive in nature (lock doors, turn out lights and wait for help), the A.L.I.C.E. program is considered a more aggressive response. A.L.I.C.E. is a program designed to work together with Lockdown procedures used frequently in our public schools and workplaces as a defensive strategy for an Active Shooter event.
Tragic events in schools and workplaces have dictated the need of enhanced options provided to staff and students to increase their chances of surviving a horrific event. The UNA Police Department in cooperation with the UNA Education Research and Inservice Center is conducting ALICE workshops. The 3 hour A.L.I.C.E. session is designed to give participants insight and response options when encountering an active shooter. This highly effective and "common sense" training has been readily adopted by many educational law enforcement institutions throughout the United States. The training is open to everyone but we are encouraging faculty and staff to take the time to schedule a session.
Hopefully you will never have to use the information you will learn, but if a situation does arise in a classroom or in an office, you will have an idea of what you can do to increase your survivability. A.L.I.C.E. sessions are offered throughout the school year, and to groups and organizations upon request.
What is Operation ID?
Operation Identification (Operation ID) is a citizen's burglary prevention program for use in homes and businesses. The Operation ID program involves marking property with an identifying number and recording serial numbers as a means of discouraging burglary and theft. It also provides police with a way to identify property should it be stolen and recovered. In communities where it has been properly implemented, Operation ID has shown dramatic results in burglary reduction.
UPD has engravers in office and are available during UPD business hours to assist students and employees in engraving their property.

Operation ID has two basic Components
- Engrave you valuables with your drivers license number so your property can be easily traced and identified as yours. Please note - DO NOT USE your Social Security Number. That number is tied to financial documents, and can be used by criminals.
ENGRAVE AS FOLLOWS:
→ Your Drivers License Number or ID Number and year of expiration
→ Engrave in two locations, one that can be easily seen and one that cannot be easily seen.
→ Photograph or videotape items and keep the photos/tape in a fireproof safe or safety deposit box. Jewelry should be photographed with an ID card and ruler next to it to show ownership and size.
2. Display a sticker that tells would-be burglars that your serial numbers are recorded, and your property has been marked.
How To Participate
To participate in Operation Identification call the University of North Alabama Police Department at 256-765-4357 and ask about borrowing an electric engraving tool. If we have one available, it can be picked up at the front counter at the police station in the basement of Keller Hall. There is no charge to use the engraver, however it must be returned within forty-eight hours. If an engraver is not available, they can be purchased at any hardware store at very little expense.
What makes Operation ID so effective?
Marked property is difficult for a burglar to dispose of - it can be traced to the rightful owner with relative ease. And, if a burglar is caught with marked property, it is solid evidence of possession of stolen goods. After Marking your property, make a list of your valuables, and keep a copy of the list in a safe place. If you should become a burglary victim, you will be able to quickly describe the stolen property from the list. This will be of great help to the police in their attempts to recover stolen property. Once property has been marked and a list made, display an Operation Identification sticker at doors and windows which might be used for entry. By advertising your participation in Operation Identification in this way, you are announcing that your valuable property has been marked and will be difficult for a burglar to resell. Often the presence of the sticker alone is enough to deter a burglar.
