Education Away Opportunities

In spring/summer of even-numbered years, the Biology Department offers an Education Away opportunity in Costa Rica.  Students enroll in BI 419 Tropical Ecology in the spring semester & BI 420 Field Experience in our Maymester and receive 4 semester hours of credit that can be counted towards their Ecology elective in the major.

Students spend the latter part of the spring semester getting prepared for the trip by learning about the flora and fauna of Costa Rica and then spend 10 days in country in May.  While in Costa Rica, students spend time at three biological stations:  La Selva Biological Station in a lowland rainforest, Monteverte, a cloud forest, and Palo Verde, a tropical dry forest.  Each station provides students with hands on opportunity to interact with scientists and the tropical ecosystems. This trip is open to students who have taken BI 112.
