graduate collage

Congratulations on reaching this important milestone!

Apply to Graduate

You must apply to graduate through the Office of the Registrar at UNA. This deadline is very early, nine or more months before your expected graduation date. Visit the Registrar's webpages for the most current information.

Graduation Meeting

There are graduation meetings in early September and late January. Although it is not required, it is very useful and only 15 minutes. Notifications are sent by UNA email.

Graduation and Immigration Status

When you apply to graduate from UNA, this causes changes to your Form I-20 or DS-2019. Your End Date will be shortened during finals week of your graduation semester to match your graduation date. A DSO or ARO will notify you by UNA email when this happens.

Grace Period

F-1 students are granted a 60-day Grace Period after the completion of a Form I-20. J-1 students are granted a 30-day grace period after the completion of the DS-2019. This Grace Period immediately follows the End Date on your I-20 or DS-2019.

Future Plans in US

If you are planning to begin a new degree in the US, you must have the new Form I-20 or DS-2019 before midnight on the last day of your grace period.

  • Watch the important dates. Talk with a DSO or ARO to learn what deadlines affect you.
  • Apply for the new program early and be sure to let them know you are currently in the US. Learn the admission requirements.
  • Take any needed exams (such as GMAT, GRE or MAT) as soon as you can. It may take multiple attempts to earn the required score.

If you are planning to do OPT (F-1 only), your complete application must be received and checked in at the Dallas, Texas USCIS facility before midnight on the 60th day of your grace period. See a DSO as soon as possible to learn what steps to take.
