Wi-Fi Troubleshooting

When in a highly populated areas such as the residence halls network interference can be an issue that affects your Internet connectivity. Everything from your microwave to your body causes interference on the network and impacts the wireless experience. The wireless network utilizes both the 2.4GHz band and the 5GHz band and interference is much greater in the 2.4GHz spectrum. To help lessen this issue ResNet5 (broadcasting only on the 5GHz band) is offered as an option and is the recommended first choice of networks for you to connect to; however, to connect to this wavelength you will have to have a compatible device. If you have not purchased your laptop or tablet or other device look for one that supports the 802.11a/n/ac  standards. This should enable you to connect to ResNet5. If you already have a device that does not support these standards then one option is to purchase a dual band adapter that will enable this support. These USB devices are easily found on Amazon and cost between $15-30. If neither is an option for you then you will utilize the ResNet network in the 2.4GHz band.
