Issues Forwarded to Senate Committees - 2015/16

The following issues/policies were forwarded to Senate committees in 2015/16:

  • Leave of Absence statement
    • At the September 3, 2015 Senate meeting, a motion was made and approved to ask the Faculty Affairs Committee to review this statement with respect to time counted toward tenure and promotion.
    • At the April 2016 meeting, the committee presented a draft revision of the statement. A motion was made to postpone the item to let Senators take it back to their departments for further review. This motion passed.
  • Office Hours/Communications
    • At the December 3, 2015 meeting, the Senate voted to send this issue to the Faculty Affairs Committee. The committee was asked to bring a workable draft to the February meeting and to send tabulated comments received from faculty to the Senate by the January meeting.
    • At the January 2016 meeting, the Senate voted that whatever draft presented should not increase the number of office hours as stated in The Faculty Handbook. The Senate also voted at the January 2016 meeting that the committee excise all mention of a prescribed number of hours for responding to communications.
    • At the February 2016 meeting, the Senate voted to approve a draft policy, with several small amendments, presented by the committee. The policy was forwarded to the Shared Governance Executive Committee for their consideration.
    • On March 15, 2016,  SGEC Chair Marilyn Lee notified President Franklin that, after reviewing concerns expressed by the COAD, the SGEC determined this as an irreconcilable issue and was thus returning it to the originator - Faculty Senate.
    • At the March 2016 meeting, the Senate reviewed a draft of the policy that included revisions suggested by COAD. The motion to approve this revision failed. A motion to approve changes suggested by Senator Scott Infanger passed. The approved changes were forwarded to the Shared Governance Executive Committee.
    • On 4/29/2016, an email was sent to all employees notifying them that the changes to Section 3.3.3 -- Office Hours had been approved through Shared Governance and by President Kitts. The changes have been incorporated into the online version of the Faculty Handbook.
  • Sick Leave
    • At the December 3, 2015 meeting, the Senate voted to send the issue of faculty sick leave to the Faculty Affairs Committee.The timeline for this issue is to be determined at the January meeting.
    • At the January 2016 meeting, the Senate voted to have a draft policy available at the March meeting.
    • At the February 2016 meeting, the Senate approved a draft policy proposed by the committee. The policy was forwarded to the Shared Governance Executive Committee for their consideration.
    • At their February 29, 2016 meeting, the Shared Governance Executive Committee voted to send the proposal to the Council of Academic Deans for review and comment.
    • At their March 14, 2016 meeting, the Shared Governance Executive Committee voted to send the proposal and the suggested revisions from the Council of Academic Deans to the Faculty/Staff Welfare Committee.
