Internship

Communication majors must complete 1-3 hours (50-150 contact hours) of off-campus student internship (COM 499).  Completing the internship during the summer is recommended. It affords more time to build professional skills and contacts that will help your career development.  We encourage you to complete your internship at a location outside the immediate Shoals area.  A copy of the COM 499 Departmental Syllabus is available here or by clicking the image below.  See your internship instructor for specific requirements.

Independent Study

The point of an independent study is to allow you to propose a course of study (not just a project) in an area for which we do not currently offer courses. Proposals should be submitted to your academic supervisor by mid-term of the semester prior to the semester in which you plan to enroll in the independent study. COM 499 INTERNSHIP—REGISTRATION APPROVAL FORM

Students are not eligible to register for COM 499 until an internship has been secured, this form has been submitted, reviewed and approved by their advisor. Students are responsible for pursuing and securing their own internships. You will be notified if your request is approved/not approved.

If approved:

Your advisor will take the necessary steps to register you for the course.

If not approved:

Your advisor will let you know if they have questions or need more information. 

Note: This form and process have been developed to ensure our students are getting the best professional experience while earning their required COM 499 course credit hours. Our goal is for students to intern under supervisors who have relevant experience/education in their field of study as well as participate in work that enhances their preparedness to secure a professional position after graduation.
