College of Arts and Sciences Excellence Awards for 2017-2018

COAS Excellence Awards Nominations

Each award requires a 200-300 word letter of support. YOU MUST HAVE CONSENT OF THE NOMINEE. The CAS Awards Committee will review each application, unless otherwise noted, and vote to determine the award recipient.  The online submission of the list of nominees is due Friday, November 3, 2017.

 

Once the online submission form is received, the nominees and nominators will receive an email with a link to a Drop Box Folder where they can upload their materials.  Nominees will be given a deadline of 4:30 pm, Friday, December 1 to submit the required materials.  All nominees will be contacted, but you are encouraged to give direct advanced notice once a nominee has been determined to be sure they accept the nomination.

 

A past awardee of the Outstanding Faculty Award, Outstanding Department Chair Award, Outstanding Innovation in Teaching, Outstanding Adjunct Award, Outstanding Staff Award or any Department Award is not eligible to be nominated for the respective award for a period of five years.  Each Early Career Award can be won only once.

STUDENT AWARDS:

Outstanding Senior Awards – The committee will select one awardee from each of the four majors’ areas (STEM, Humanities, Performing and Fine Arts, and Social and Behavioral Sciences).  The award is based on student accomplishments and is not limited solely to GPA. In their materials, the applicant should address their accomplishments in the areas of Academics; Intellectual, Literary and Artistic Contributions; Service; and Leadership. One award will be given for STEM, Humanities, Performing and Fine Arts, and Social and Behavioral Sciences for a total of four awards. 

Required Materials for Outstanding Senior Award

From Nominee: one-page summary documenting their accomplishments and career goals related to their specific area

Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award – The committee will select one awardee from each of the four majors’ areas (STEM, Humanities, Performing and Fine Arts, and Social and Behavioral Sciences). The award is based on student accomplishments in their respective field, including, but not limited to, conference presentations, performances, publications, exhibitions, etc. The materials should provide context for the level of accomplishments.  One award will be given for STEM, Humanities, Performing and Fine Arts, and Social and Behavioral Sciences for a total of four awards. 

Required Materials for Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award

From Nominee: one-page summary documenting their accomplishments in the area of Intellectual, Literary and Artistic    Contributions

Outstanding Graduate Student Award – The committee will select one awardee based on their intellectual, literary and artistic contributions, academic performance, service, leadership and/or teaching while working towards a Master’s degree.

FACULTY AWARDS:

Early Career Outstanding Teaching Award – One awardee will be selected from the College of Arts & Sciences for outstanding performance in teaching. Only tenure-track faculty who have not yet submitted their tenure application, but have been at UNA for at least 36 months, are eligible.  Nominees should submit materials documenting their accomplishments as a teacher, with a particular focus on their accomplishments while at UNA. No appendices or materials other than those requested will be considered.  Nominees should include a summary of course evaluations in their portfolio.

Nominator:  letter of support

 

Early Career Outstanding Research Award – One awardee will be selected from the College of Arts & Sciences for outstanding intellectual, literary and artistic contributions.  Only tenure-track faculty who have not yet submitted their tenure application, but have been at UNA for at least 36 months, are eligible.  Nominees should submit materials documenting their intellectual, literary and artistic contributions, with a particular focus on their accomplishments while at UNA.  No appendices or materials other than those requested will be considered.

Outstanding Faculty Award – One awardee will be selected from the College of Arts & Sciences based on outstanding performance in teaching, intellectual, literary and artistic contributions, and service.  Nominees should submit materials documenting their accomplishments in the areas of teaching, intellectual, literary and artistic contributions, and service, with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year.  Nominees should include a summary of course evaluations in their portfolio, including scores and numbers of evaluation participants. No appendices or materials other than those requested will be considered.

Outstanding Department Chair Award – The office of the Dean will select one awardee from the College of Arts & Sciences based on outstanding performance and leadership as a department chair. Nominees should submit materials documenting their accomplishments as department chair, with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year. No appendices or materials other than those requested will be considered.

Nominator: letter of support

 

Outstanding Innovations in Teaching Award – One awardee will be selected from the College of Arts & Sciences based on outstanding innovation in teaching.  The committee will place a particular emphasis on the innovative use of technology in the classroom. Nominees should submit materials documenting their accomplishments and innovation in teaching, with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year. Nominees should include a summary of course evaluations in their portfolio, including scores and numbers of evaluation participants (last 3-5 years of evaluations). No appendices or materials other than those requested will be considered.

Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award – One awardee will be selected from the College of Arts & Sciences based on outstanding teaching.  Nominees should submit materials documenting their accomplishments in teaching with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year.  No appendices or materials other than those requested will be considered.  Nominees should include a summary of course evaluations in their portfolio.

STAFF AWARD:

Outstanding Staff Award – Awarded to a staff member in the College that has gone above and beyond their job requirements during the past year.  Nominees should submit materials that cite specific examples of excellence that could include service, initiative, leadership and contributions to faculty and student success with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year.

DEPARTMENT AWARDS:

For each of the following awards, nominees may submit a summary of accomplishments, not to exceed 500 words, related to the topic in addition to supporting documentation they choose to be relevant with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year. The CAS Awards Committee will ask that a panel of judges from outside the College review the materials and decide the award recipients. 

 

Student Advocacy Award – Recognition for the department excelling in support of student success, including, but not limited to, excellent advising, student participation in internships or other summer programs, student-centered department culture, etc.

Required Materials for Student Advocacy Award

Nominator: a summary of accomplishments, not to exceed 500 words, with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year.

 

Community Involvement and Outreach Award – Recognition for the department excelling in service and outreach activities in the community.

Nominator: a summary of accomplishments, not to exceed 500 words, with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year.

 

Cultural Diversity and Inclusion – Recognition for the department that best promotes cultural diversity and inclusion, including, but not limited to, international outreach, cultural diversity within faculty or student groups, including studies of other cultures into curriculum, study abroad opportunities, etc.

Nominator: a summary of accomplishments, not to exceed 500 words, with a focus on the 2016-2017 academic year.
